Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all visitors to this blog 🙂 I’ll probably be making a few more entries before 2007 in Thai, but the next English entry will have to wait until a few days afterwards. In the meantime, here are some of my favorite Christmas songs. The last one, a long number from my most favorite Broadway musical RENT, might be hard to understand for anyone who hasn’t seen the musical, but I hope some of the show’s satire and wittiness come across in the song. Oh, and if you’re not in a mood for ‘depressing’ holiday songs, don’t listen to these tracks: Another Snowman, Christmas Card From a Hooker in Minneapolis, Sister Winter, and Christmas Day (hey, at least I didn’t upload Broken Social Scene’s “Handjobs for the Holidays” :P)
Feel free to download the MP3 of these songs here:
- Do They Know It’s Christmas by Pete Yorn
- Someday At Christmas by Stevie Wonder
- Happy Christmas (War Is Over) by John Lennon
- A Fairytale of New York by The Pogues
- Another Snowman by Sandycoates
- Lonely Christmas by Ben Folds Five (from “How the Grinch Stole Christmas” soundtrack)
- When I Get Home For Christmas by Snow Patrol
- Angel In The Snow (unreleased version) by Elliott Smith
- Donna and Blitzen by Badly Drawn Boy
- Christmas Card From a Hooker in Minneapolis by Neko Case (original by Tom Waits – scroll down for lyrics)
- I Want An Alien For Christmas by Fountains of Wayne
- Christmas Eve by Teenage Fanclub
- Sister Winter by Sufjan Stevens
- X-Mas Curtain by My Morning Jacket
- Holy, Holy, Holy by Sufjan Stevens
- The Rebel Jesus by Jackson Browne (original by The Chieftains)
- Christmas Day by Jim White
- That Was The Worst Christmas Ever! by Sufjan Stevens
- White Christmas by Mike Kozelek (original by Bing Crosby)
- Christmas Bells by RENT: Original Broadway Cast
And just in case this post might induce more people to listen to Tom Waits’ songs, here are the lyrics to “Christmas Card From A Hooker In Minneapolis,” which I think Neko Case covers very well:

hey charlie i’m pregnant
and living on the 9th street
right above a dirty bookstore
off euclid avenue
and i stopped takin dope
and i quit drinkin whiskey
and my old man plays the trombone
and works out at the track
and he says that he loves me
even though its not his baby
and he says that he’ll raise him up
like he would his own son
and he gave me a ring
that was worn by his mother
and he takes me out dancin
every saturday night.
and hey charlie i think about you
everytime i pass a fillin station
om account of all the grease
you used to wear in your hair
and i still have that record
of little anthony & the imperials
but someone stole my record player
now how do you like that?
hey charlie i almost went crazy
after mario got busted
so i went back to omaha to
live with my folks
but everyone i used to know
was either dead or in prison
so i came back to minneapolis
this time i think i’m gonna stay.
hey charlie i think i’m happy
for the first time since my accident
and i wish i had all the money
that we used to spend on dope
i’d buy me a used car lot
and i wouldn’t sell any of em
i’d just drive a different car
every day, dependin on how i feel.
hey charlie for chrissakes
do you want to know the
truth of it?
i don’t have a husband
he don’t play the trombone
and i need to borrow money
to pay this lawyer
and charlie, hey
i’ll be eligible for parole
come valentines day.
